Botanical Exploration: Peru

Join fellow plant-lovers on an exciting botanical tour through Peru. Spend a few days exploring the gardens and history of Lima. Stay at an Amazonian Lodge and live in the natural wonder of the rainforest. Top off this expedition with a trip to Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley.
Kelly McGowan will be hosting this tour. Kelly is a horticulturist and has been involved in horticulture education & research for 10 years in Southwest Missouri.
DAY 1: WELCOME TO LIMA!
Upon arrival, you will be assisted at the airport and transferred to the hotel. This evening, you will be picked up and transferred to Huaca Pucllana Restaurant, to enjoy a welcome dinner.

DAY 2: TOUR OF COLONIAL & MODERN LIMA
You will visit the modern & colonial parts of Lima, known as the City of Kings, starting at the districts of Miraflores and San Isidro, passing by a pre-inca sacred place before heading to the historic center. There you will explore some of the most historically important streets of the city, leading to the Plaza de Armas, where you will have time to take pictures of the amazing colonial architecture that surrounds it. Then you will visit the impressive Convent of Santo Domingo, an astonishing building with colonial style. After visiting the historic center you will head towards modern Miraflores to make a stop at Parque del Amor and enjoy the coastal views, flowerbeds and colorful mosaics.
DAY 3: NATIONAL RESERVE OF LACHAY
The National Reserve of Lachay is home to a great diversity of flora & fauna. This takes place in the desert that is watered in the months of June to August by the pristine mists of the Pacific Ocean. In addition to a great scenic beauty thanks to thousands of years of work of the wind, this is the perfect time of year to visit as the typical vegetation in this ecosystem has started to bloom.
DAY 4: LIMA/IQUITOS
Breakfast. At the scheduled time, you will be transferred to the airport to board your departure flight to Iquitos. Reception and welcome at the airport and transfer to Nauta and boarding on our private boats on the Maranon River.
Visit to Fundo Casual (pending weather), a tropical forest run by residents, where we will see different species of wildlife. Transfer to the ecolodge to be welcomed by a member of the Kukama Kukamiria ethnic group. Enjoy a conversation on the myths and legends of the Amazon, and take a night tour of the forest surrounding the lodge.
Pacaya Samiria Lodge (2 nights)
DAY 5: PRIVATE RESERVE/NAUTA CANO/PACAYA SAMIRIA NR
Interpretive walk-through of the Restinga Forest, following the path of the primates. Departure to Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, Nauta Cano area with GUARANTEED watching of pink and gray dolphins. Navigation through the Jungle of Mirrors. Tour of the flood forest, sighting unique flora of the area.
DAY 6: COCHA SHIRIYACU/SAN JORGE/IQUITOS
Boat of the Maranon River with artisinal fishing towards Cocha Shiriyacu. Visit to the San Jorge Community to interact with its members and understand their way of life and ancestral customs.
Sonesta Cusco Hotel (2 nights)
DAY 7: CUSCO
You will visit the city of Cusco, a UNESCO World Heritage site. You will start your tour at the iconic San Pedro Market. The visit continues to the Koricancha Temple, an ancient Inca palace and cult center for the Sun God. Above the Order of Dominicans built a church which still stands to this day. You will ascend to the Fortress of Sacsayhuaman, an impressive example of Inca military architecture. Afterwards, you will Q'engo archeological site, where important Inca ceremonies took place. Finally, you will arrive at the Plaza del Armas where you will visit the Cathedral, the most important temple in the city.
DAY 8: MACHU PICCHU
At the scheduled time, you will be transferred from Sonesta Cusco Hotel to Ollyantambo to board the Vistadome train to Machu Picchu.
The natural beauty of your surroundings makes the train the best way to start your visit. When you arrive, you will start your ascent from Aguas Calientes into the ruins. At Machu Picchu you can see every part of one of the Seven Modern Wonders of the World, relax and takes some impressive photos. You will then return to Aguas Calientes for lunch and at the proper time, board the train to your next hotel in the Sacred Valley.
Inkaterra Hacienda Urubambo (2 nights)
DAY 9: SACRED VALLEY
Visit Chincero, a small picturesque Andean village. Visit its significant Inca ruins dating from the end of the 15th century. On the way to Ollyantambo, you will stop at a viewpoint where you can take in the best views of the Sacred Valley.
DAY 10: CUSCO
After breakfast, you will be transferred from the Sacred Valley to Cusco to board your flight home.

*Shared Occupancy pricing is for a group size of up to 14 travelers. Should the group be larger, the price will be reduced per person. Group size is limited to a total of 20 travelers.
**Please note, the single rooms will share a Bungalow at Pacaya Samiria Lodge. Each guest will have their own bedroom on its own floor and will share a bathroom. The single guests will all have their own rooms at all other hotels.
